Tom Lüthi was unbeatable on the last of the three test days on the 4.4-kilometre track in Jerez. With a top time of 1:40.326 in the second practice session, the Swiss rider took the lead of up to four tenths of a second. In the overall standings of the test he was 0.122 seconds ahead of the rest of the Moto2 field and is now more than ready to follow up in Qatar.
However, the LIQUI MOLY Intact GP squad's first official shakedown for the 2020 season was not about chasing times, but about working out an optimum basic setup for the first races.
The crew of the two Intact GP Kalex rider has done excellent work for the next test, which will take place the follwing week from 28 February to 1 March in Qatar. There, the final preparation can be done before the season opener will finally take place from 6th to 8th March at the Losail International Circuit.
Tom Lüthi Test day 3: 1:40.326 (-0.335) - 26 laps - P1
Riding the fastest time was not the main focus of this test. The focus on the last day was still on the pace, set-up for the races and finding the feeling with different variations. It was very interesting, everything on a high level. I can really go out and do fast laps right away. It doesn't matter if I have old or new tyres, I'm always in the low 41s. That is perfect for us to take the bike further. I made a conscious plan with my crew chief today to try the soft tyres and to see if I can get anything out. I had problems with them for a long time, I couldn't improve with these tyres, which is what the others did all three days long. It wasn't the aim to set the best time, but to see if I could improve. Now I am really happy because I managed to get a lot out of it. The fastest time I set would have been even faster because I had a small mistake in turn one. So it was not the absolute killer lap. It's incredible what times you can ride with the Moto2 bike here. I am proud of my crew. I have to say a big thank you because we have worked very well. It gives me a lot of confidence for the season. I am relaxed and happy that we can continue working like this in Qatar. The start of the season can actually already come. After Jerez we can definitely say that we are ready and we definitely are there!
